Debora Warner/NYC-The Total Movement

Someone said to me once, "Whatever you liked to play when you were a child...that is what you should do as your job."

For many, a variation on that may be so, and if not consider it.

Go play, re-visit and remember what that was.

Debora has brought Art and Movement around full circle to create her business, read on to see how.

_________________________________________________________

Debora Warner's art career spans over 10 years, at least 5 countries and her third solo exhibition in New York opened last September.
She became aware of her appreciation for art at a very early age and that attraction grew when she visited the museums in New York while still in high school.

After a few years at school, Debora moved to New York and positioned herself among the community of artists downtown. She initially created audio-based installations, then transitioned to sculpture and then painting.
At the height of her career, she become involved in the sport of triathlon as she started to take long breaks from the studio in order to spend time at the gym with fellow fitness junkies.
Her athletic background was not something new as she swam competitively in past years, and had been running for almost 20 years.
Training is a huge stress reliever, and it wasn't long before she became hooked on endurance. "The more I learned about exercise physiology, the more I wanted to know," so she sought professional credentials in fitness in the summer of 2009.
Taking a brief hiatus in California she hit the trails of Marin County while studying exercise science.
She returned to New York that Fall to work on her New York exhibition while simultaneously launching her fitness career at Equinox.
Debora sees fitness from the perspective of an artist.
"Training is an art and there is so much room for creativity and fun. Our bodies were designed to move, and I approach every session with the confidence that through manipulating specific variables, we will create changes in my client's physical and emotional state. Art can potentially accomplish the same thing."
Three years later, Debora is an ACSM certified personal trainer and running coach. She has her own fitness business, The Total Movement that provides private, personal training, and includes running clinics for women who are beginning to run and/or race.
Still racing, training, and making art, Debora is gearing up for a NYC marathon run in the fall after completing a few half marathons this season.
Visit her website for more information: www.thetotalmovement.com
The ladies of Mile High meet twice a week in Central Park.

Debora is also offering a 15% discount on a 10-pack of training sessions if you sign up for a complimentary session before the end of the month.

Andrew Kovacic-NYC, Co-Producer/Film Editor of 'Nando'

Meeting people who are in persuit of their dreams makes me feel like clapping!
So does this film 'Nando' co-produced/edited by Andrew Kovacic.
Andrew was invited into Magda's Style Room based on first impression -- good spirit, hootzpah and love for good German beer -- plus he liked my idea on bringing members together over a common interest.
Over a year later I discovered he started out on one path and was going for another, in this case film making.

If you are moved by the trailer, or find it interesting to support film in process, you can click the appropriate links to support Andrew -- or just watch and feel good knowing that work like this carries depth in telling human stories in history.

Andrew Kovavic, originally a Colorado native, remembers it being sweltering hot as he cruised through the Holland Tunnel in a car he was delivering to a friend after a post-graduation tour of the country.
With one bag and one suit packed, it wasn't entirely clear what his underlying motive was.
Soon after landing in NYC, he called his Mom to tell her he "didn't make" his one-way flight back to Denver.

After a few months couch-crashing and applying for what felt like every job in the city, he was hired at an investment start-up focusing on the environment and renewable energy, something that he remains passionate about.

When the financial malaise of 2009 took place, Andrew found himself re-evaluating his life, thinking deeply about what to do and knew this time around he had to balance his creative and business aspirations.

It became clear that his love for film making would become his career of choice.
He enrolled in an editing class, began to learn the art of story telling and immersed himself in the craft.
Contrary to his life as a business analyst, he bagan to work for free for production houses to find an 'in.'

After a year, he found himself editing and producing commericials before landing at a reality TV show with MTV.
At the same time, he took an internship at 'Goldcrest Post-Productions' and met his future friend and film partner, Marco Gozzo.

Now in pre-production, the film written and directed by Marco, is titled 'Nando' and now the two are raising the money to support their efforts.

The story tracks a rail-station worker at the end of the second World War and examines the relationships of people under the control of tyrants who maintained thier dreams and every day life.
A true story based on the life of Marco's Grandfather, who before passing away last year was captured on tape telling the story at the rail station.
This became the inspiration for the short film.

The fund raising closes in early May and they will be shooting just weeks after that, just outside of Rome.

Check out the short trailer below showing what is to come and thanks for showing your support if Andrew and Marco's film 'Nando' interests you! Links/below to see and donate if you wish.

Marisa Ferrarin, owner of Duane Park Restaurant

NYC

---------------------------------------------
Duane Park Restaurant hosted the Magda's Style Room Event Mixer this past Sunday 3-27!

Open Tues-Saturday, Duane Park is a wonderful place to go for laid back
elegant ambience and delicious food.
The staff loves Marisa -- so you can guess how this affects the vibe and service there -- plus the restaurant presents music each night of the week.
There is no place in Tribeca like this -- offering jazz piano, opera night, R&B, Magic and Music or Jazz/Burlesque.

-----------------------------------
Marisa Ferrarin grew up in Birmingham, England and managed 80's Bands by the age of 17.
She never thought she would have a restaurant in NYC -- or
become the owner of the very special Duane Park Restaurant in Tribeca.
Back in Birmingham, in the 80's she ran a restaurant at age 20 for her father, while during this time (and for many years prior) she knew and hung out with many bands on the music scene.
Her first and most serious passion was music.
She saw all the motown bands by the time she was 14, spent all her money on music, and hung out at clubs where she was friends with musicians and various 80's bands before she began to manage them!

Eventually she came to NYC with a band called Silver Action.
She loved NYC and eventually stayed here and landed a job working at Duane Park Cafe as a waitress and manager that lasted many years.

The recession hit in NYC and when Duane Park's owner decided to retire and sell? Well...she grins as she describes how almost through default she was "coerced"  into becoming a partner.
She decided after she looked further into her soul that she had a vision of a music venue.

Marisa's Duane Park Restaurant today is a supper club focusing on different shows each night highlighting popular live bands while also serving great American cuisine with a Southern twist.
Currently the Jazz/Burlesque performances on Friday and Saturday nights are glamorous, fun and fill up quickly as they are the hottest show in town.
If you love Jazz, talented Singers/Vocal performers and stunning costumes book early or you might not get a reservation.

The beautiful interior of Duane Park is magical in design.
The unique and exquisite etchings on wallpaper were created by artist Paul Etienne Lincoln, also Marisa's husband.
His vision was that the design of the room be reminiscent of a parlor in a New Orleans mansion at the turn of the century.

If you go to the website, you can see more photographs of Marisa's Duane Park restaurant, the performers, the schedule for shows and the beautiful space.

Patrick Knowles/Baltimore-Fulfillment Account Manager

 .........................
 What a great job title!
Magda's encourages/supports people to fulfill their work lives with what they really like to do and it this sounds positive-- the sound of accounting for and managing fulfillment.
Patrick's job title -- he says "...is a really fancy way of saying that he makes sure orders get to the people who order them, monitoring data between the company and the warehouses."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patrick moved to Baltimore when he was 5, after living in 5 different cities including, Atlanta, D.C., Chicago,
Pittsburgh and Milwaukee.
His father became the first Executive Chef at the Hyatt Inner Harbor hotel when it first opened, which brought the family to Baltimore, where he still remembers smelling whichever spice was being produced that day at the old McCormick factory on Light street.

Patrick
graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a major in Art History, minor in Spanish and unofficial major in college Basketball and worked in the banking business as a loan officer. Eventually he moved on to be a mortgage broker.

In 2006—well before the mortgage debacle came to a fever pitch—he lost his job and began to rethink his options, and was nervous about what to persue next.
Three weeks before unemployment ran out, Patrick’s friend (who coached his Baltimore Sports and Social Club football team) suggested he apply to the company he worked for, as he was just promoted and his position became available.
The position was in customer service at the Baltimore-based publisher Agora.
Agora is a medium-large company (about 400 employees in Baltimore and over 100 more in offices worldwide) that is parent to several small publishing divisions.
Although he originally expected to stay in banking/finance -- he's now had three different positions in 4 years.

Now in the role of Fulfillment Account Manager, Patrick monitors data between the company and the warehouses.

When not working, Patrick continues to play football (now for 11 seasons) and coach (for 7) for the Baltimore Sport & Social Club, watches lots of sports (Orioles, Ravens and Terps) and has been developing a green thumb in the warm seasons with girlfriend Tara.

Dr. Chris Ochner/NYC.

Chris loves fashion.
But wait -- there is so much more!
Trying to wrap your noggin' around this feature will be educational.
Brain studies? PhD? 3 Masters degrees? and yes...the list goes on.
I don't think I've ever met a fashionable person who is able to sponge information like this by such a young age and look so good doing it (Chris volunteered to be a model for a Magda's fashion show/spot at the Broadway comedy club in 08'/thankyou Shannon Sutherland and thank you Chris).
For all of you out there like myself who ever thought a formal higher education was too involved, taxing or tedious -- get to know Dr. Chris and take note, it CAN be done.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Chris Ochner, the son of two therapists, grew up in a small town in N.J.
He remembers the transformation that occurred for him, from an awkward kid with braces at 95lbs morphing into a nationally ranked tennis player turned model by the end of highschool.

He has enjoyed wearing many hats since then, taking various jobs (personal trainer, model scout, corporate recruiter and dj) along a long road of post secondary education resulting in two masters degrees, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Now, Dr. Ochner is one of the youngest faculty members in the department of Psychiatry at Columbia while he completes his third masters in bio-statistics.
He is also a research associate at the New York Obesity Research Center and devotes all of his efforts doing medical research in the area of obesity.
Trained as a behavioral researcher, he is a self-taught neuro-imaging expert and considered a leader in the study of the brain's control of eating behavior.
Currently he is conducting several brain imaging studies, including one where he will predict which individuals select healthy vs. unhealthy foods, who will ingest more calories by looking at brain scans before people take their first bite.

His most interesting recent project is volunteering as a guinea pig in yet another study about McDonalds -- having to eat there every day for 2 months.
Strangely he says he's making healthy choices and has actually decreased his body fat after a month and a half.
He describes this as "Arch Madness" (for all the NCAA fans) says he's in the best shape of his life and also admits -- this is more fun than scientific.
The project involves scanning his own brain while looking at images of junk foods, then comparing those to people who are obese doing the same thing.
The purpose of all of this? He's waiting on approval for a larger study to show how damaging our food environment is...but to show it IS possible to eat a McDonald's diet and NOT get fat? His word of advice regarding these offbeat experiments -- "Don't try this at home kids."
Although unassumingly describing his research as “neat stuff,” Dr. Ochner is on the forefront of helping to develop the next generation of weight loss treatments that provide the effectiveness of obesity surgery without individuals having to undergo a surgical procedure.
He has authored a number of medical journal articles on obesity, a continuing education course for health professionals on obesity treatment, a book on the brain’s control of eating behavior and is currently working on a website that provides medical nutrition facts and diet plans.
Finally, Dr. Ochner consults for a neurology research group, co-developing an auditory intervention for Alzheimers' patients, and co-authored an article featured on this month’s cover of Neurology.

Wow there it is folks!

When asked what he likes to do in his spare time, he says smiling... “What’s that?”

Don't be fooled by the tall thin models that pose in her hot dresses and tops on her website, these designs are for all body types and as Liz Lemon would say, "that's a deal breaker!"
(I am convinced she would love Magda's).
So comfortable fabrics that move, and most you can wash (serious!) that are versatile and compliment the body. Yesss!
It also is important to mention how lovely, sweet, smart and fun it is to be in the presence of Csilla.

Csilla and her partner John
Upon completing her associates degree in fashion design at F.I.T. in New York Csilla spent time as a designer for Nautica, Liz Claiborne and Macy's.
After six years in corporate fashion she decided that her vision was not being realized and set off on her own to start CsillaWear.

Kristyn Wink/Baltimore--

Hair Stylist/Designer.

Serendipity is finding something valuable or delightful when you are not looking for it.
Here's mine this week...
I met Kim (Baltimore Stylist) who wrote a 'shop talk' article in Baltimore Magazine on Magda's that Phyllis (Real Estate broker) read.
Phyllis emailed me, donated/personal shopped and sent Kristyn (hair stylist) to the next event (be events/Federal Hill).
Kristyn donated/personal shopped and asked her salon (YOU Salon-Ellicott City) to host the next event.
Fast forward to this Sunday--Magda's Style Room!

After you think on your own serendipity for this week - read the 'Meets' on the incredible Kristyn Wink and how she has transformed into the ultimate hair designer working with you at YOU salon, where they spend quality time consulting -- providing more than just a cut, color or 'do'.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Kristyn started her first semester at UMBC studying modern dance she had no real idea of what she wanted to do for a career.
Dance was a talent since being a kid--but things were changing and she was losing her passion for it.
She took a job as a receptionist at a small 'beauty shop'  to make some extra cash and to enjoy one of her priorities (aside from figuring out college) which was to wear cute outfits.
Fashion was growing on her and suddenly this beauty biz too.
After a big decision to leave college including a sit down with 'Dad' more than half way through--she knew it was the right choice to follow her gut and persue her new dream.
Her next step was to attend the Fila Academy in Maryland, a Paul Mitchell Hair School at the time.
After working in the industry for two years, she discoverd YOU Salon in Ellicott City -- voted one of Baltimore's best salons year after year.
You salon's top notch training team and mentorship program gave Kristyn the chance to refine her skills and grow as both a professional and as a person.
Thanks to the opportunities provided by the salon's owner Robin Gribbin, and the support of her amazing team, Kristyn has begun to expand her skills into styling hair for fashion and beauty photography.
She is currently building her portfolio and working with photographers, make-up artists and fashion stylists in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area.

Kristyn Wink is a Baltimore based hairstylist whose strong love of fashion influences everything she does.
You can find and book an appointment with Kristyn at YOU salon -- so go to their website below and check out how they consult with you to create your look giving personal time and a feeling of confidence.

You can see the modern but comfortable space, meet Kristyn,  the owner --Robin, and get some free mini-salon services at the Magda's Style Room this Sunday!
For more info on that go to www.magdastyleroom.com

p.s. Don't forget to thank who is in your serendipity this week.
Thank you! and hope to see you at the mixer! on Sunday.

Allison Adoradio
Jewelry Designer/Non-Profit Human Rights

Allison doesn't discuss much on the interesting career she's had working with non-profit human rights -- partly because she likes to focus on one endeavor at a time and partly because she is humble in her success.
This feature focuses on her passion designing and making jewelry - but let's be inspired by the mix.
The idea of being multi-talented and not taking lightly this concept of building what one love's to do is always at our fingertips, or in this case at our wrists.
Read more on her small works of Art and a little on Allison to support her long time love.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allison graduated from the University of Michigan (many moons ago) and her professional life is in the nonprofit arena.
Over the past two decades, she has worked for a number of prominent human rights & advocacy organizations - overseeing the finance, human resources & administrative functions.
Jewelry-making keeps her grounded & in touch with the intrinsic artist in all of us.
Her professional career has taken her from the art world to the apparel business &, finally to the nonprofit human rights arena.
However, her heart lies in her jewelry.

Maszia is a jewelry line designed & created by Allison Adoradio, always inspired by forms in nature, colors in fashion, or jewelry seen from a distance or in a photo.
She comes from a family with a strong interest in crafts - knitting, quilting, jewelry and other handicrafts.
In 1998, she started out by making very simple pieces & then began to receive requests for weddings, presents, & pieces to go with special outfits.
Over the years she has expanded her interest and designs into a wider range of stones, colors & shapes, as well as more complex designs.
She believes that each gemstone has its own inner essence & meaning as do people and this is what draws us to a certain piece or stone without knowing why.

Jewelry making has become a creative outlet of never ending ideas that bring the satisfaction of creating something beautiful to her and hopefully, a little sparkle to brighten the day of the wearer or beholder.

Maszia pieces range from bold to elegant to delicate to classic.
They include a range of textures, shapes & patterns created with quality semiprecious & precious gemstones, pearls of all colors & shapes, precious metals, the occasional shell pieces, antique ceramic or glass beads, and one-of-a-kind pendants & charms.

Allison sells her pieces at private sales & by appointment.
Browse current & past pieces at maszia.com & send an email to jewelry@maszia.com if you have questions or interest.
Most items are versatile, working equally well with jeans, work or evening attire – their character adapts to the wearer & the occasion.

Bridgette Artise - NYC

B.Artise Originals/Mother/Creative and 'Born Again Vintage'

I keep my favorite book 'Born Again Vintage' created and written by fashion designer Bridgett Artise (with writer/poet Jen Karetnick) out on my table -- to remind me how something can be turned into something else.

Bridgett makes gorgeous one of a kind fashion from a vintage mix -- restructuring clothing into insanely cool and beautiful wearable masterpieces that are unique and can be custom made.
When I asked Bridgett to do a feature she sent me a very personal and courageous piece that deeply moved me.
It also reminded me -- to listen to that inner voice, the clues that follow -- and to go for what moves us - to do that.
When we go through unbearable pain, there is hope, that we can somehow, some way, go for joy and make something beautiful.
 ---------------------------------------------------
- by Bridgett Artise, author of 'Born Again Viintage'
"After graduating from the Fashion Intsitute of Technology at 22, I held positions as an Associate Buyer at Accessory Place (now Claires's - shows my age), Toddler Buyer at Bloomingdales and as a Manager at Macy's before accepting my most important position to date - mother.
At this time, I put away my fashion attire for mom jeans.  I did the whole PTA, volunteer at the schools and bake cupakes thing -- yet my passion for fashion kept calling me.
Then I lost my third child.

I was looking for ways not to be consumed by grief, and restarted a non profit organization called Just 4 Them. It provided a venue for children to display their talent and win scholarship money.
I was looking for something to fill the extra hour we had for the talent show and decided to go to the local thrift shop and buy some clothes and remake them for the kids to put on a fashion show.
Well who knew -- I picked all vintage items, not me -- because I didn't even know what vintage was -- but one of the judges clued me in.
By the second year the fashion show became the main attraction, and a talent in me that I did not know I had, was now unveiled.
After three years of Just 4 Them shows I decided to give it a go at my new found talent and B.Artise was born."
"Fast Forward 7 years, and I can say I went from selling at local flea markets to selling in boutiques in Tokyo, being featured in Lucky Magazine to recently being featured on the NJ's newest reality show Jerseylicious.  I went from taking sewing classes to teaching a vintage class at my Alma Mater (FIT)"
"What I am most proud of? Authoring the book Born Again Vintage --http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/03/born-again-vintage-a-whole-new.html ) which has done things no other craft book has --  to have been featured in over 40 publications. It is no accident that my focus has become Born Again Vintage, the clothing line
"Substainable Fashion is the future, and being deemed a "green" designer is a honor to me. Reconstructing Vintage/Recycled Clothing has become my passion... that it originates from the loss of my daughter, Macanzie only fuels my drive to keep taking it to the next level."

------------------------------------------------------------------Bridgett is an outstanding woman and I recommend that anyone inspired by creativity get her book 'Born Again Vintage'.
It is also a treat to find her at the 'Young Designer's Market' in Soho some Saturdays.

Sheri Baumel/Baltimore-from T.Rowe Price to 'Tastefully Simple'

We work jobs, even for big companies and it's just well... often not enough!!
So there are these 'other' companies that people work on 'the side'.
We all know them.
Some are for beauty, some are for vitamins, some are for this or for that...but here's one that makes it easier to EAT.
Yes I said it! EAT.
We all certainly love to do that!
I not only love to eat, I also often don't make time to cook (ok, breakfast, crabcakes, chocolate chip cookies and a couple other random recipes that usually require a glass of wine as a side dish).

Check out Sheri -- she's a Mom, works full time, and works 'Tastefully Simple' as a side job, to help people not have to cook but feel like they did.
Sounds good to me (sorry foodie friends I know it sounds like cheating, but is it really if you can't tell?!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sheri graduated in ‘90 with a Marketing degree from University of Maryland, College Park then completed course work toward her Masters in Marketing Communications from Johns Hopkins University.

Sheri has worked with T. Rowe Price in various departments for over 17 years -- in marketing, editing, and investment compliance.

The idea of more income, selling a catalogue of products she loves was appealing and necessary in these tough economic times.

After attending a 'Tastefully Simple' party several years ago as a social visit, she decided in 09' (after randomly attending another) to get hooked!

She hosted her own party in November...and now that she's tasted, cooked with, and served up the loving foods... she and her husband decided to be a part of the company.

An additional home business that offers what she describes as "delicious products, and a way to expand her circle of friends."

A product line that sells itself -- since it's  easy to prepare, has few simple ingredients, gets consumed and yes the more you sell, and the more others sell the more you make.

Sheri's first independent venture... and she is excited to experience and share it.

For more info on this 'Tastefully Simple' concept, how to connect the dots on an additional business, to order, or just to email Sheri on the whole thing here's her info below.

Lauren Maresca - NYC

Fine Artist/Restaurant Server

Now a time, where people are seeking more and new work  'Magda's Meets' highlights professionals and artists who are established and those that are on their way.
Well actually...aren't we all really always on our way?!

Magda's Style Room newcomer Lauren Maresca wants to commission more portraits in NYC...I am so excited about her work!
My mother, a portrait artist -- inspired me while growing up as I watched and admired her.
To put another person's essence to the page requires a laser eye that connects to the spirit of another, a love of the study of human beings, savvy technique, and raw talent.

In the hopes of more Portrait Commissions and more work in small Restaurants - both of which she is looking for... here's Lauren, Artist/Server!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lauren Maresca is originally from South Carolina now living and working in NYC  for almost 4 years.
Drawing and painting as a child, art became a constant throughout her life.
She graduated from Cornell in 2004 with a BA in French Literature and minors in Visual Studies and Art.
She also has studied knitting!

Lauren was inspired by a teacher who taught her art history and how to draw using methods that were used in the 19th century.
Most recently in New York, she experiments with different methods of artistic expression and is expanding and developing her personal aesthetic.
"A portrait is inherently personal, and its inception comes from the interaction between another person and myself."

Lauren enjoys waitressing/bartending part-time because of the fast pace and the opportunity to interact with people. and is searching for more work in a small family type restaurant that offers more of a non-corporate service style.

Attached are a few Portaits of Lauren's to see some of her work, all different and drawn at different times of her life. Pass or Contact Lauren if you New Yawkers know of small restaurants hiring and if you love her Art, connect and connect both cities.
Thanks!

Felicia Terlecki - NYC

Ballet Dancer/Specialty Packaging Planner!

Personal shopping is so much fun with Felicia because it isn't a question of what/which looks good on her...it all looks good on her!

Felicia can wear pretty much anything she tries on in her size profile. Ballet perhaps?!?

Ooohhh I love it when people work successfully in business, often because in their prior lives they were performing in the Arts!
More evidence that our interests, persuits and jobs aren't limited to what would think them to be.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Felicia decided to become a professional ballet dancer as a child attending classes up to six days a week, six week summer camps -- and at nine -- performed with the Princeton Ballet and Hamilton Ballet Theater.
After high school, she danced with the New York Theatre Ballet and Eglevsky Ballet, both in New York .

Ballet dancers often have a limited career so she gained computer and business skills and worked for Johnson and Johnson as a temporary employee during 'off' seasons.

This experience led her to start as an administrative assistant at Colgate Palmolive -- a big company with lots of growth and tuition assistance programs.

Taking advantage of this she got her Bachelor of Science in Business at New York University going part time, while she worked full time at Colgate where she continues to be employed today.

She has moved her way up the corporate ladder in sales, operations, and currently supply chain as a Specialty Packaging Planner.

Felicia  won the Global “You can make a difference award” at Colgate the most prestigious award given by the company.

Felicia has not lost her ongoing love for ballet as she still takes ballet classes and performs for fun.

Molly McGuire/NYC

Production Assistant/Comedy Writer

Molly grew up in Joliet, IL and she knew she wanted to work as a comedy writer after visiting NYC to visit her Dad's best childhood friend - comedian Jim Downey on SNL.

Molly says "this was when I was ten, and at the time - I severely lacked a sense of humor." That's hard to believe when you talk with Molly now. Her funny AND beautiful demeanor sweeps you off your feet because her wit catches you off gaurd at the same time. (Most often followed by a smile).

When I found out during a shop/donate appointment for Magda's that Molly was looking for a new position in Entertainment Writing or a job just simply in Entertainment (also having a background in Production assisting), the first thing I thought was, let's do a feature asap!

Comedienne, writer, production assist, and detail savvy! Perfect to hire in the Entertainment Industry. Why? lots of reasons! But mainly she'll make you laugh.

------------------------------------------

Molly says:

"I attended Saint Mary’s College (which I referred to as Satan Mary’s) – an all womens’ Catholic college across the street from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Although the academic atmosphere was wonderful, the social scene was…not. As a student at Saint Mary’s, I was a contributing writer and editor at the campus magazine for three years, eventually upgrading to the editor-in-chief.

During the course of my senior year I completed my first novel, That's What She Said, which has been rejected from roughly 99% of New York City literary agencies. Nevertheless, I still wrote a book, and despite the lack of agents offering actual representation, many have told me that it is quite good and encouraged me to continue on my quest for publication. During the college years I also was a co-columnist for the website CollegeHumor.com and, during my return to Illinois for summer, studied comedy and comedy writing at The Second City, Chicago.

The moment I graduated, (Bachelor of ArtsEnglish Writing/07/Saint Mary’s College) I sold all of my childhood possessions and used the funds to start up life in New York. I came with no job, only my aspirations to guide me through, and was lucky to land a job as a page at the Late Show with David Letterman within my first month. Although it was only a nine month position, I charmed my boss (or rather, begged and pleaded) and worked at the show for over a year. It was a phenomenal way to kick start my career.

After Letterman, I looked at my resume and realized I  had never been a production intern, and probably should get such an experience under my belt. From January to June 2009 I interned at The Colbert Report which was, in a word, awesome.

I now work part-time as an editorial assistant for author Adriana Trigiani (Big Stone Gap; Lucia, Lucia; Very Valentine). One project I completed for her was assisting in adapting her novel Very Valentine into a screenplay. While I enjoy learning about the publishing world, I am anxious to get back into film and television!

Molly's Resume available upon request.

Maura Costello-NYC

Touching Tiny Lives Foundation -Fundraiser
A native New Yorker, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2005.
Following graduation, she worked as a designer in Chicago for two years when she began thinking that she could do more to help others.
Through a friend she came to discover the 'Touching Tiny Lives Foundation' -- a student internship exchange program through Notre Dame's anthropology department.

Her first fundraiser in Chicago called "Mother's Day Mayhem" got her hooked on organizing events for a cause. After traveling to Lesotho - which solidified her understanding of the 'Touching Tiny Lives Foundation' and their commitment to helping babies who have no one to turn has now led her to her current project/fund-raiser -- not to mention intense physical training! Maura is really proud and humbled to work for such an inspiring organization.
The Touching Tiny Lives Foundation  (TTLF) in Lesotho, Africa.
Lesotho, a tiny country in southern Africa, has been devastated by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and currently has one of the highest infection rates in the world. As a result of this crisis the life expectancy in Lesotho is only 38, leaving millions of children orphaned every year. The foundation has three distinct programs: 1) Safehome - a temporary rehabilitation center for the most at risk children 2) Outreach - mobile teams that provide support to children living with their families and 3) Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) -  a program that works to reduce the incidence of vertical transmission of HIV and works to educate pregnant mother's on how to protect the health and safety of their child.

Maura and friends (Chris, Nell, Dan and Meade) are running in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 11th to help this foundation.
Check out how to help Maura and her posse here in NYC/east village on September 25th for her fundraiser Our Sweat Saves Lives.
Entertaining information is here on how to give and attend this fun party!

Elif Cohn - NYC - and the beautiful elif Bags!

Elif Cohn displayed her handbags at the Magda's style roOm - NYC at Bistrouge in the East Village in April. I couldn't get over the super quality and asked her why these weren't selling for over 500 dollars at Barneys or Bloomingdales? With the economy in a tough way of major brands taking on new artists the timing couldn't be worse for this (according to the fashionistas in the room) - but the good news... how much better for Elif to have her own company/website and sell them on her own for less!

Exquisite, extremely well made, and classic! Check out the elif bag by clicking the website below with the breakdown of styles, history and pricing with great pictures that show the incredible quality. Elif is offering a special discount to all of you on the Magda's style roOm 'B'more/NY' mailing list if you can't resist!

-----------------------------------Elif Cohn, born in Gemlik, Turkey by the Marmara Sea  moved to the much bigger city of Istanbul by the age of 8. At 25 she moved to the U.S. to get an MBA.  Soon after, Elif began working a marketing job for Sony. After five years (and becoming a marketing manager), she decided to start her own company making functional and beautiful handbags for business savvy women. The vision for these bags was to create a sophisticated and beautifully made bag with the room to hold a laptop, (could double as a weekend bag too) while looking chic. The quality really makes these bags special.

elif is a young company which grew from the idea of combining a feminine handbag with a laptop bag.
Two gifted artists work together to create each model using hand and machine-assisted craftsmanship. 'Leather Interlaced Fabric', (made by the weaving of leather strips through fabric made of linen and silk yarn) is the
signature style of weaving that you will rarely find in well made handbags.
All of the elif bags are incredibly beautiful, classic and made extraordinarily well.

Miriam Songster, NYC -- Installation Artist and Blog Creator.

Miriam Songster grew up near Boston and currently calls Brooklyn, NY home.
She received a BA in Economics and worked as an economist before attending graduate school, where she earned a Master’s degree at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunication Program.

Miriam’s artistic pursuits began with documentary film and video, starting with her involvement in a women’s video collective leading to the scripting and production of documentaries, public service announcements, and video installations such as that for Boston’s “First Night” festival.
Her interest in installation grew during her time with Reclamation Artists, a group of Boston-area artists and architects working in transitional urban spaces.

Since completing her telecommunications degree Miriam has been producing web-based projects as well as immersive, multi-sensory installation pieces. Her most recent work includes the installation “Dirt” for ArtSpace New Haven, sculptural light pieces completed during a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, and the ongoing blog project “We Are Having Weather.”

The Weather Photos blog (http://blog.weatherphotos.org/) was started by two artists, Miriam Songster in NY and Hege Dons Samset in Berlin. Since the Spring of 2008 the blog has featured weather-related photos from around the world.
The blog creators continue to seek artists and non-artists alike, to participate by sharing their photos.
The basic ideas behind the project
1) to use photographs to communicate feelings about the weather
2) to use the Internet to connect people in  different geographical areas.

Participants are hooked up with a partner and over a two-week period posting a new photo every day. The personal and sometimes subtle shifts in emotion or mood that might be portrayed in the photos is of interest, so this project is a way to get to know someone better or to develop ties to someone new.
Some people sign up with a partner already in mind, for others we find a partner based on your stated preferences. You might choose to participate from home or maybe you will be traveling and want to share your photos with a partner in your hometown. And if your job is weather-dependent we will be extremely happy if you participate.

To view the blog go to http://blog.weatherphotos.org/. You can sign up via the link in the second paragraph of the "Blurb About the Blog" copy, or just go directly to http://blog.weatherphotos.org/wp-login.php?action=register). All of the photo sets remain on the blog, which has become a reference for both weather and emotion, across geography and time. If you have questions or feedback feel free to email Miriam at weatherphotos@spamex.com

Chris Martin, Baltimore -- Electrical Engineer

Chris designs and tests RF microchips for Texas Instruments.

People that can do this work amaze me! Not only gifted in electronics Chris also supports Art, Travel and retro vehicles.  Chris also (THANKS CHRIS!) sports the most 'awesome t-shirt' collection from the 'Magda's style roOm' events! Here he is modeling one in this picture below!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the day Chris makes the chips that help make games like 'Guitar Hero' go wireless, but there is more that makes Chris Martin tick (no not that one, nor the Ikea one…).
On the side, he has made guitar fuzz pedals that are in use around the world and in the hands of working musicians -- he hopes one day to SEE all the bands that are using his pedals.
Chris also does live sound at local venues such as the 9:30 Club, which allows him to hob-knob with the roadies of rockstars.
The next goal of the multi-talented engineer is to finally get a drum kit... and start bashing away.

Chris is a Maryland native, born in Towson and grew up in the overly planned city of Columbia where he still resides.
A graduate of the Maryland school system with a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins, he is proud that he is one of his few classmates that actually is doing something that is directly related to his degree.  In his spare time he tries to get out in the woods biking and hiking as much as possible, and when the weather gets bad hit the slopes snowboarding.  With a 1964 Mercury, and a 1969 Rolls Royce, he has upped his pimping game this year.

Kim Cook, Licensed Massage Therapist-NYC.

I remember back in the mid 90's, living in NYC was taking a toll on my physical stamina. Although a person of high energy and good health, the idea of a serious massage was on the list.
Kim Cook at the time, a fellow 'Union Square Cafe' friend was getting licensed for Masssage Therapy -- so when she asked me to be her 'guinea pig' as part of her training I nearly jumped out of my stripes (ahem...our beloved uniform).
Having no expectations and just being thrilled at the gift, it was a complete surprise how she turned me back into the physical being I felt I 'used' to be... before my adult brain began transferring work and stress into physical strain. This wasn't just a relaxing massage like that of a spa, Kim additionally had the knowledge of the muscular system and joints to where after I looked younger, was able to breathe differently and found my alignment back on track.
Since then, I've been passing Kim's cards. Now she practices many types of body work with a detailed understanding of how the body connects to better health.

Here's her deal below and to boot a special for any of you who need a little adjustment!

Shannon Sutherland/NYC -

Stand up comedian, actress and producer of 'The Shannon Sutherland show'
I first met Shannon at the 'Magda's style roOm' B'more/NY on Green st. in Soho after she had emailed me through my webpage on myspace.
Shannon was on the search for quirky gorgeous fashion and people who speak to her humorous heart. When she walked into the room she had a presence of a movie star and I instantly liked her.
Now broadening her career recently moving to LA she travels back and forth to NY to perform, produce her show and shop, never missing a 'Magda's' event.
After inviting me to her show at 'The Broadway Comedy Club' I was hooked on her talent and her bearing. A stand up who combines her love of style with her jokes! A dream come true!
Read about Shannon below, check out her blog and info on her shows if you love comedy and fashion, and stay tuned for her Sept. 13th gig featuring yours truly with 'Magda's' Models onstage!

Miss Shannon Sutherland is a fashion comedian  raised in Kansas -- but decided to leave when her fellow classmates made fun of her fabulous Betsey Johnson dress.
After moving to Michigan to attend the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy,  Shannon moved to New York and graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in theatre.
After college she started doing stand-up comedy and has preformed at Stand-Up NY, Gotham Comedy Club, New York Comedy Club, and the Broadway Comedy Club.  She has also appeared in a sketch with Rob Corddry on The Daily Show and has done segments on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Maxim Channel.
In the summer of 2007 Shannon decided to combine her love of comedy and fashion and produce her own fabulous show. So on July 14 2007 The Shannon Sutherland Show was born -- hosted by Shannon, having four comedians, and showcasing a special fashion guest. Her next show is on Sept. 13th at the Broadway Comedy Club and features Amber the creative Designer of 'Magda's style roOm' B'more/NY. Print out flyer on Shannon's blog, (click below) and get a discount to get in to the show.
Now Shannon can be seen doing stand-up regularly all over the country and has a fashion blog at shannonspassion.blogspot.com.

Arnie Gonzalez/NYC.

Arnie, working as a fitness instructor and SAG actor in NYC created a blog several years ago addressing his interests in growth between people and what moves them.
Recently this expanded into what is now his first book 'You Know What To Do'.
It's not unusual to be thrown from one career into another unexpectedly simply by persuing the art of what brings joy.
Maybe the best role Arnie will play -- check out more on Arnie below and if it moves you, check out his new book.
Arnie Gonzalez brings over 20 years of life wisdom to his craft as a writer. A professional bodybuilder (he holds the Mr. America title in the 1994 All Natural North America Bodybuilding Championship), a certified fitness instructor, and a working SAG actor.

In 2002, Arnie created what would become a very popular blog on dating and relationships called, OneHandedClap.com.  The success of this blog with his readers, coupled with his experience, moved Arnie to add life coaching to his repertoire.  He is a sought after coach and “inspirational healer,” with clients in the acting community. Arnie can often be found offering impromptu and impactful coaching to his acting colleagues on set.

The release of You Know What To Do will celebrate his entry into the world as a published author. By sharing experiences, thoughts and ideas in his work, Arnie’s desire is to help spark the individual to become fluent in the language of his own life.
Arnie Gonzalez’s latest work, You Know What To Do, brings the crux of a vital life theme
straight to the reader’s heart:  during times of uncertainty, he believes that everyone “knows what to do.”
Every individual is capable of tapping into his own knowledge, and has access to personal wisdom
that can be used as a catalyst for change.

"Oftentimes, when we are faced with challenges in our lives,
our answers are forgotten, filtered, and lost in the mire of the subconscious
that comes from living a life in the dark… a state of unawareness".
Using real-life stories to illustrate his belief,
You Know What To Do offers simple alternatives for living a life with intention…
an awakened state from which your own answers are discerned.
