The story of Magda's Style Room
Magda's Style Room began as an effort to combine great fashion with bringing the right people together to support their businesses.
Originally I would run all over the Baltimore and NYC area picking up bags of donations from members who were generous enough to give me their clothes (and happy to get rid of what was no
longer) and then throw trunk show Mixers which I would call EVENTS (which they felt like to me since they were such a big production!)
I would put up a trunk show of anything and everything to shop under 5 dollars, and invite anyone who was interested, giving those that donated credits to shop free.
Eventually...the Events began to attract business owners, and people who were showing up to shop and to mingle for networking.
I would force people to leave their cards, swap them out, show eachother their books, talk about what they did that moved them and encourage them to work together!
Features on members began, where for years I would send out fun one page write ups on members' businesses, Art or projects.
Eventually I needed a way to make this a business for myself, although lots of fun and love and fashion, the husband was beginning to worry I would wear myself and our bank account thin from
giving away the farm and running all over the mid atlantic region just for the fun of it.
I decided to create a Shop-at-Home/Donate Service, where the cost would still be insanely affordable...but the clothes would be gorgeous, hand picked and unique.
The functional stuff along with the cute and glamourous -- contemporary and some vintage too.
The business officially began toward the end of 2009, and continues to grow now more effectively giving personal service but still keeping to the original goal.
Now, the Shop to Give model that I created - much inspired by fashion icons such as Blake Mycoskie (TOMS) and Lauren Bush (thank you Maura) is a way to Shop entirely for another more
wonderful reason, while buying for yourself...members get to give what they spend! How outrageous! Someone said to me, why not give 10% or 25%? My response was "This isn't a sale, this is a
movement!"
My hope is to begin by broadening the member to member list dramatically, Give Give Give and to grow eventually to the point where members can easily give to others in Need beyond just
their friends.
2012 is a year of change, thankyou for supporting Magda's Style Room and participating in a NEW way to shop fashion that does more.
Originally from the Baltimore/Annapolis area of Maryland -- the time I spent in Baltimore City always inspired me to create something there -- while at the same
time -- becoming a true New Yorker... I didn't want to leave the big apple.
Unlike NYC, Baltimore has the quirky fashion of Hampden, the magic of Mount Vernon and an unpretentious nature to its style that is individual as opposed to what's
'in.
I've always found this is always more interesting and a way to make style like Art. Also more interesting is the idea of recycling clothing that has no home.
The high end fashion that no longer fits or suits one person can become the perfect fit to another.
Not only a new chic sustainable source for quality clothes that is affordable, Magda's Style Room is so great because it helps members between both cities
connect online and through the common interest of individual style.
Having had a wide range of contacts over the years from working in different circles of talented and savvy people naturally evolved into a special and
private mailing list of exceptional members and their friends...that have the common desire to make the world a better place, want to network with grace and believe in style through
sustainable fashion.
A professional Make-Up Artist, Style Maven, Astral seeker and Restaurant Bartender/Waiter (years of supporting my efforts so grateful!) I believe it is time for us all
to follow our bliss, do what we love, and get paid for it!
Support community whether close by or far away is now permanently in...and showing up along the journey -- while looking and feeling good along the way is just
good style.
